Dr. J. Scott Smith is now seeing patients at Faith Community Health System.

Advanced bone health is now available in Jack County with the arrival of Dr. J. Scott Smith, an orthopedic surgeon who is joining the local team of medical professionals at Faith Community Health System (FCHS).

“We have had orthopedic services on our strategic plan for a couple of years. Being able to bring in Dr. Smith, allows us to fulfill another element of our plan,” explains Frank L. Beaman, CEO of FCHS.

Orthopedic surgeons specialize in the musculoskeletal system’s care, which includes bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons.

Individuals may want to seek an orthopedic specialist’s care when they begin to experience bone or joint pain. This pain can begin either naturally or through an injury. Other signals that you may need to see an orthopedic specialist include hip or knee pain, pain from joints resulting from arthritis, or ongoing neck or back pain. Injuries, such as bone breaks or fractures, also often require specialized care.

A Colorado native, Dr. Smith has an extensive academic background. He graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, with a degree in chemical engineering. With a focus on health and medicine, Dr. Smith obtained his medical degree from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Medical School and completed his residency and fellowship at UCLA in orthopedic surgery.

“When it comes to medical expertise, Dr. Smith continues to go above and beyond, Beaman noted. “He holds many patents on various surgical devices and develops medical software to improve a hospitalized patient’s experience.”

“For me, it is not just about helping patients find relief,” Dr. Smith says. “Healthcare is about improving the quality of outcomes and ensuring patients have a great experience in the process.”

Dr. Smith also has considerable experience treating people with complicated neck and back problems, including those who may have failed previous back surgery.

“There is always hope with proper medical care,” Dr. Smith adds. “I have found that when you take the time to completely understand a patient’s ailments and any past medical care, there are often new techniques and approaches that can be taken to achieve new outcomes.”
